A New Format for the WSIAT Reporter

In 2006 the WSIAT Reporter will become a free electronic publication available on the Internet. In this way the Reporter will reach a larger audience interested in workplace safety and insurance issues. This format represents part of a new direction by the Tribunal to manage information more strategically for the benefit of the WSIAT and its stakeholders. For example, in early 2006, all WSIAT decisions will be full text searchable for free on the website CANlii.org. The WSIAT Internet site will be reorganized so that information about the Tribunal will be more accessible. Readers of the electronic Reporter can expect increased functionality with the new format. The Tribunal encourages organizations to add the link to their Internet/Intranet sites. Users will be able to review the summaries of reported decisions and hyperlink to the full text.

The WSIAT Reporter was first published in 1988. Volume one included selected decisions from December 1985 to April 1986. In the Introduction, the Chair of the Tribunal, Ron Ellis, wrote that the “new reporter series will publish the major decisions, complete with indices and comprehensive headnotes…..it is these “top hits” of the year which will be presented in consolidated form in this new reporter series.” Over the last 18 years the Reporter has provided readers interested in workplace safety and insurance issues with excellence in law reporting.

2005 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Tribunal and it is fitting to celebrate past achievements. Therefore, the last paper volume of the Reporter will include a history of the Reporter written by our Publication Counsel, Marvin Goldstein. This history reveals that the Reporter changed over the years to meet the needs of its subscribers and the new format will continue this tradition.

Should you want to receive notification of the publication of the new electronic reporter or ask questions about the new format please email the WSIAT at the following contact Alison Colvin, Director Information Services or email WSIATINFO@wst.gov.on.ca
